From the moment puberty hit, my skin has been giving me problems. Up until 5 years ago, I tried everything I came across that promised to clear my skin in an effort to manage the acne on my face: masks, cleansers, creams, soaps and washes, the list goes on and on. It was so depressing every time a new product failed to manage the acne.
Nevertheless, the experimenting finally paid off and I found products that were not only affordable but also worked wonders on my face. I still get breakouts from time to time especially after binging on junk food and towards the time of the month but for the most part, my face has cleared quite noticeably.
I've listed what has worked for me below. I'm looking to add a few more products like day and night creams and an anti-aging cream. Once I do, I will be sure to update you on what has worked for me.
Washing
It wasn't until I came across Himalaya Neem Face Wash that I started seeing progress.
Neem has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic, anti-fungal and analgesic properties which are very helpful when trying to treat skin problems. Its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties are what help most with acne, black heads, dullness, aging and pigmentation (acting as a toner).
Exfoliating
I have been using face scrubs for a long, long time. The one brand that I have stuck with is Eden Apricot Scrub. One of the disappointments I had with other face scrubs is that they were too gentle and didn't leave my face feeling clean.
Eden's Apricot Scrub is tough enough to properly remove ingrained dirt, old skin and make-up while still leaving your skin feeling soft. Scrub your face at night and in the morning if you felt too lazy to remove your make-up the night before.
Moisturizer
It's very important to keep your face moisturized. I used to think that because I had oily skin, I didn't need to moisturize. How wrong I was. A good, non-greasy moisturizer will keep you skin soft and supple and hydrated throughout the day. Your skin will also be more elastic and will leave you looking and feeling younger.
For a moisturizer, I use Nivea Soft. It has served me so well over the last 5 or 6 years that I have never thought of opting for anything else.
Diet
One of the benefits of not living at home and also staying in a country where vegetarianism is very, very normal, is that I learned how to enjoy meals that did not have meat. I think reducing red meat, junk food, and drinking a lot of water helped me to lose weight. This healthier diet also helped clear my face.
Day and Night Creams
I haven't tried any of these yet but I have heard that they are quite good. I would need to do a more detailed post on these once I try them out. What I will tell you is that day creams contain a moisturizer and sun screen which protects your skin from harmful UV rays. Night creams contain active ingredients which rejuvenate your skin.
