My first thoughts about distressed jeans centered around the grunge trend, rebelling as a youth and stepping out of the box. I bought my first pair of
distressed denim and wore them while I was expecting and borrowed a pair from my sister after I had Elly and wore them
here and
here and
here. Having worn them too many times to count, I can now safely say that I am in love with distressed denim.
Then came the SUPER distressed denim trend. Forget about the few tears you saw in my jeans and think of jeans that your mama would make you throw away because they make you look a mess. Some time back, I saw Khloe Kardashian in a pair that to me was taking this trend a bit too far. But Rihanna seems to have nailed it perfectly. There are a host of celebrities who have taken up this trend quite well and make it look chic.
From my experience, for this trend to look polished AND intentional, you need to pair clean cut tops, classy heels and well thought-out accessories. Now unless you are going for the grunge look, this means wearing your super distressed denim with a blazer, a well-fitting blouse, some pumps with a nice handbag and pretty jewellery. Otherwise, some low-heel ankle boots or canvas shoes with a t-shirt and sweatshirt or grandfather sweater will work quite well.
