WHAT I WORE: PENCIL SKIRT AND BROGUE BOOTIES

Image
OUTFIT DETAILS: Black pencil skirt; Turtle neck, statement necklace; brogue booties Happy new month lovelies!!! With the cold weather being as persistent as it has been the last few days of July, I have been struggling to find smart, warm clothes to wear. This past Sunday was one of those days. Then I remembered that I had a black pencil skirt that had yet to make its debut on the blog. I've worn it once before with a peplum top to a job interview. This time, I wore it with a wool turtleneck and pink sweater. I added dark stockings and my favorite brogue booties.  My main issue with the cold weather is avoiding wearing dark colors from head to toe or jeans and a very thick sweater (which has become my stay at home uniform!). I have found a way of countering this temptation. Since I can't stop wearing my wools when the temperatures dip, I make an effort to buy warm weather clothes that have interesting features like this pink sweater with the flower detail, this ora...

MEN’S STYLE: HOW TO LAYER

Image
Hi all!! Neville of Kenyan at 7 requested I do a how to layer effectively post, especially targeted to men.   Layering is a skill that you acquire after a lot of practice. I often get amazed at the antiques people pull in order to stay warm. But it doesn’t have to be so difficult to keep warm and still look neat and tidy. Below I’ve spelt out tips for every man that are assured to keep you warm during this cold weather. 1.        Vests  I know many guys think that wearing a vest is something that is reserved for older men. But when the temperatures drop, nothing keeps you warmer than that extra layer, worn closer to your skin. Cotton vests are available everywhere from supermarkets to exhibition stalls to even hawkers. As I’m big on neutral colours for innerwear, whites, blacks and grays will suit you very well. 2.        T-Shirts Again go for neutral colours. Those old sports t-shirts that y...

MEN'S STYLE: Winter Trends

Image
Hi all! It's been a long time since I did a post on men's fashion. I have been getting requests from some of my guy friends on what looks good, what is in fashion and consequently, what should I pay good money for right now.  Below I put together photos of my favourite winter trends for men for autumn/winter 2013. And since the temperatures have dropped in Nairobi, I think this is a good guideline for anyone looking to shop for the man in their life or for men shopping for themselves. TRENDING COLOURS 1. Grey The monochrome trend is big, no huge right now. Pair grey pants with a grey blazer/trench coat to truly capture this trend. If you choose to go full on grey, wearing different shades of the same colour is the ideal way to go. Like the first pic on this post, pair a grey suit with a shirt of a lighter shade of grey and a grey tie. Top it all off with confidence and you are off to turning heads as you walk down the streets. 2. Dark Red  Weari...

DRESSED FOR UNCERTAIN WEATHER

Image
When the weather can’t decide what it should be like, it’s always safer to go overboard with your dressing and then remove the layers as the day gets warmer. Last week when the weather was bleak I was caught completely off-guard. I wasn’t expecting the temperatures to remain low throughout the day. So when on Monday the weather threatened to be a repetition of the weekend, I chose to be safe rather than sorry. I chose to wear a pair of denim trousers (this pair are my absolute favourite and I’m beginning to wonder what I’ll do when they start getting old), which I paired with an off-white sweater and a chocolate brown turtle-neck. Outfit Details: Jeans: Sarojini Market, India Sweater: Gikomba Market, Nairobi (Ksh 50) Belt: gift Earrings and necklace: gift Boots: Kins, Sarojini Market, India Accessories can make or break an outfit, so I chose my brown boots, beaded necklace and African earrings. I added a belt which I fitted loosely around my hip. I’ve never worn ...

DRESSED FOR JOB INTERVIEW PART 3

Image
Hi!! I hope you've all been well.  I was called for an interview impromptu some weeks ago and I had no idea what to wear, since I don't own any suits. So I opted for my trusty black pants and a green sweater because it was really cold that morning and my beige blazer. I wore black heels, green and brown earrings, neon green scarf and carried a black leather bag. Outfit Details:  Trousers: India Jacket: India Sweater: from my sister Heels:gift Bag: from mum Earrings: gift   This outfit was a little bit out of the demands made on dressing when going for a job interview. I'm not a stickler for rules and sometimes I just can't bear to abide by them. This is in terms of my dressing. For other things it's a whole different story. On a positive note, the interview went well. The lady who interviewed me has such and inspiring story, which I'll be sure to share with you very soon. I think I got the job!! Which has made me grin from ear to ear tod...

DRESSED IN A MAXI AND SEQUINS

Image
**** This post was meant to be up last week but due to technical issues, I was unable to post it. Hi!!! It's so cold today and yet I thought we had started the month on a warmer note. Oh well, what to do??? I’ve read so many blog posts on how to wear sequins during the day. I’ve always wanted to try it out but when the sun is shining at its maximum, you don’t want to be responsible for blinding everyone on the streets. Then my sister (I have two by the way), bought this sequined scarf and I couldn’t wait to include it in my outfits. I wore this outfit to class, a brown maxi dress with lots of blue (turtle-neck, belt, sequined scarf). I added a black blazer for protection against the cold, stocking and flats. I carried a brown hand bag and wore brown earrings.  Outfit Details: Maxi Dress: Sarojini Market, India Turtleneck: Chandigarh, India Belt, scarf, handbag, earrings: gifts AWESOME READS THURSDAY  Next month I celebrate m...

FOR THE LOVE OF DENIM

Image
Happy new month everyone!!! I hope you're feeling ready to tackle this month of August. Have you ever missed an item in your wardrobe so much that you found a way to include it in your wardrobe during the week? I had missed wearing jeans during the week so much that I went to the extent of altering my timetable so that I can wear these. Jeans are a huge part of my personal style preferences, especially straight-leg ones. So I dressed down with a slightly oversize sweater and colourful scarf as I was running some errands. I added yellow earrings and hair flower clip (which I forgot to photograph), carried my brown bag and wore my blue canvas shoes.   Outfit Details: Denim: Sarojini Market, India Sweater: borrowed from my sister Scarf: borrowed from mum Earrings: gift Handbag: Sarojini Market, India Shoes: Bata, India (out of stock, similar in any Bata) When wearing oversize clothes like a sweater or baggy pants, ...
